This blogpost is by Graham Jevon, Cataloguer, Endangered Archives Programme Creating detailed and consistent metadata is a challenge common to most archives. Many rely on an army of volunteers with varying degrees of cataloguing experience. And no matter how diligent any team of cataloguers are, human error and individual idiosyncrasies...
Matching entities across data sources using different identifiers and formats is a pervasive issue on the web. This group revolves around developing a web API that data providers can expose, which eases the reconciliation of third-party data to their own identifiers. OpenRefine's reconciliation API is used as a starting point. Our goals are to document this existing API, share our experiences and lessons learnt from it, propose an improved protocol in the view of promoting it as a standard, and build tooling around it. A description of the existing protocol can be found here: https://github.com/OpenRefine/OpenRefine/wiki/Reconciliation-Service-API

The aim of this screen cast is to show on a step-by-step basis how to transform Excel tables to RDF data and how to link it to external data sources. For the transformation process we are using Google Refine with RDF Extension to Google Refine. The aim is to show how to build a basic RDF structure, link particular tables and explain the reconciliation process. We link our data to DBpedia and Europeana SPARQL endpoints. In case of any questions, please contact the creator of this movie - anna.dabrowska[at]deri.org or the creator of RDF Extension -- fadi.maali[at]deri.org
