From all-nighters at the office to insensitive male coworkers, working mothers and mothers-to-be often describe the tech world as hostile to their needs
Joy Buolamwini is a brilliant coder, but she had an issue: facial recognition algorithms don't always recognize her face unless she wears a white mask. This is an example of the subtle ways in which racial privilege excludes full participation in learning opportunities, so Joy did something about it - she started coding programs that are more inclusive. She started a revolution, and she's ready to get you on board!
Joy Buolamwini is the founder of Code4Rights and a graduate researcher with the Civic Media group at the MIT Media Lab. Joy is a Rhodes Scholar, aFulbright Fellow, an Astronaut Scholar, a Google Anita Borg Scholar, and a Carter Center technical consultant recognized as a distinguished volunteer. As the Chief Technology Officer for Techturized Inc, a hair care technology company and Swift Tech Solutions, a global health tech consultancy, Joy gained technical competency by developing software for under-served communities in the US, Ethiopia, Mali, Nigeria, and Niger. During her Fulbright Fellowship in Zambia, she explored empowering engaged citizens with skills to create their own technology through the Zamrize Initiative

What millions of Google searches reveal about our national psyche.
Courts, banks, and other institutions are using automated data analysis systems to make decisions about your life. Let’s not leave it up to the algorithm makers to decide whether they’re doing it appropriately.
While diversity and inclusion might be ubiquitous terms in the mission statement of any progressive university, these words alone do little to address the lack of diversity within the curriculum itself. So what’s really causing this disconnect? That’s what three designers and educators—Dori Tunstall
‘Once posted, forever toasted’: as 10 would-be Harvard students learned, it pays to be careful about what you say online and where you say it
As libraries explore new avenues of information access, the need for a critical evaluation of our bibliographic tools is more important than ever. With the potential of the emerging semantic web and the promise of linked data, how will systems originally designed to organize closed physical collections translate to an increasingly fragmented digital information space? How will deep-seated cultural biases affect access to a cross-cultural information environment? This paper will review the work of Sandy Berman’s Prejudices and Antipathies: A Tract on the LC Subject Heads Concerning People aiming to explore a critical framework to evaluate the cultural interoperability of library classification and subject heading systems in a broader information landscape.
Computers can learn which words go together more or less often and can thus mimic human performance on a test of implicit bias.
This Article examines the matrix of vulnerabilities that low-income people face as a result of the collection and aggregation of big data and the application of
This is a classroom-friendly (no cuss words) comic about the backfire effect.
Deep learning algorithms are often trained on data from the web, and their biases are getting hard to ignore
Study of language bias has implications for AI as well as human cognition.
Fake news is too big and messy to solve with algorithms or editors — because the problem is….us.
